How to Choose the Right Crochet Hook
Inline or tapered, aluminium or ergonomic: how to match a hook to your yarn, your project and your hands.
By Sweety Dreamz ·
The right hook makes crochet easier on your hands and gives you even stitches. Three things matter: size, head shape and handle.
Size: start from the yarn label
Every yarn label suggests a hook size. Use it as a starting point, then go down one or two sizes for amigurumi (dense fabric) or up for drapey shawls. Our hook and yarn weight chart lists metric, US and old UK sizes side by side.
Inline or tapered head
- Inline: the head is the same width as the shaft. Great for consistent stitches and for crocheters who hold the hook like a knife.
- Tapered: the throat narrows below the head. Loops slide off easily, which many pencil-grip crocheters prefer.
Material and handle
Aluminium is smooth and fast. Bamboo is warm, light and grips slippery yarn. Ergonomic handles with soft grips make a big difference if you crochet for hours or have sore wrists.
An ergonomic hook set is comfortable for everyday projects, and bamboo hooks are lovely with chunky yarn.
