Front Post Double Crochet: Step-by-Step Tutorial
Front post double crochet is worked around the post (the vertical body) of a stitch instead of into its top. It pushes the stitch forward, so the fabric gets raised texture. Alternate it with back post double crochet for ribbing, or cross it over itself for cables.
- Turning chain
- 2 chains (usually do not count)
- Height
- Same as double crochet, sitting forward
Step by step
1. Yarn over
Wrap the yarn over the hook once.
2. Insert around the post
Insert the hook from front to back to front around the post of the next stitch in the row below.
3. Pull up a loop
Yarn over and pull up a loop around the post. There are 3 loops on the hook.
4. Finish like a double crochet
Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, twice.
Illustrations show the hook and the loops on it at the end of each step. Instructions use US terms (FPdc); in UK patterns this stitch is written as FPtr.

Tips
- Post stitches take more yarn and make a thicker fabric. Allow about 25% more yarn.
- Back post double crochet is the same, but you insert the hook from back to front to back.
- For ribbing, alternate FPdc and BPdc. On the next row, work FPdc around FPdc and BPdc around BPdc.
Common mistakes
- My ribbing is wider than the body.
- Post stitches spread. Use a hook one size smaller for the ribbing rows.
- The cable crosses the wrong way.
- Work the second group of stitches in front of the first for a left-leaning cross, behind for right-leaning.
