Half Double Crochet: Step-by-Step Tutorial
Half double crochet sits between single and double crochet in height. It is quick to work, makes a soft fabric with a little drape, and is perfect for blankets, hats and garments. In UK terms it is called half treble crochet.
- Turning chain
- 2 chains (usually do not count as a stitch)
- Height
- About 1.5 times as tall as a single crochet
Step by step
1. Yarn over
Wrap the yarn over the hook before inserting it.
2. Insert the hook
Insert the hook into the next stitch.
3. Pull up a loop
Yarn over and draw the yarn back through the stitch. There are 3 loops on the hook.
4. Pull through all three
Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops at once.
Illustrations show the hook and the loops on it at the end of each step. Instructions use US terms (hdc); in UK patterns this stitch is written as htr.

Tips
- Pull the first loop up to the height of the stitch you are making. A short loop makes the stitch hard to pull through.
- Half double crochet has a third loop at the back. Working into it makes a pretty knit-look ridge.
Common mistakes
- It is hard to pull through all three loops.
- Pull up a taller loop, and hold the loops on the thicker part of the hook.
- The edges wobble.
- Decide whether your turning chain counts and stick to it. In our patterns it does not.
