About this pattern
Cloud Nine alternates puff-stitch blocks with smooth half-double-crochet blocks, so the blanket looks like a quilt of tiny pillows. Each band of blocks changes colour, and the puffs swap sides every band to make the checkerboard.
It is worked in one piece from the bottom up, with no squares to join and no ends in the middle of the fabric. Washable DK baby yarn keeps it soft and practical.
Why you'll love it
- One piece, with no joining and no sewing
- Only two stitches: half double crochet and puff stitch
- Colour changes only at the edges, every 12 rows
- The puffs make it extra squishy for tummy time
Step progress photos
- 1
First band
Rows 1–13 in sky blue: puff, flat, puff…
- 2
Checkerboard begins
The cream band starts with a flat block, so the puffs alternate.
- 3
Halfway
Four bands done. The blanket already covers a car seat.
- 4
Bordered
An sc and crab-stitch border gives the edge a corded finish.

Stroller size
Chain 82 and work 5 blocks across (P F P F P). Make 6 bands for a 50 × 60 cm stroller blanket.
Single colour
Work every band in one colour. The puff and flat blocks still make a subtle checkerboard texture.
Throw size
Chain 178 for 11 blocks across and work 12 bands for a 110 × 120 cm sofa throw (about 1.4 kg of yarn).

Common mistakes & how to fix them
- The puff blocks are wider than the flat ones.
- Pull the loops of each puff to the same height but do not stretch them. If needed, use 3 loops instead of 4.
- My checkerboard does not alternate.
- Bands in colour A start with a puff block. Bands in colour B start with a flat block. Mark the first stitch of each band.
- The side edges are wavy.
- Carry the unused colour loosely up the side, and keep the ch 2 at the start of each row snug.

Stitch guide
Info: Puff st: (yo, insert hook in st, pull up a loop to hdc height) 3 times, yo, draw through all 7 loops.
Info: Puff block (16 sts): (puff st in next st, ch 1, sk 1) 8 times. Flat block (16 sts): hdc in next 16 sts.
Info: The ch 2 at the start of each row does not count as a stitch.
Blanket body
Info: Carry the colour you are not using loosely up the side edge instead of cutting it. The border will cover it.

Assembly
- 1
Weave in the ends along the side edges, inside the border stitches.
- 2
Wet-block or steam lightly to even out the puffs. Do not press them flat.
Important notes
- Tip: Count to 112 at the end of every hdc row. Puff rows are easy to misread.
- Tip: A smaller hook for the puffs (3.5 mm) helps if your puffs come out loose.
- Tip: Machine-washable acrylic or cotton blends are best for baby items.

Open the stitch libraryPattern FAQ
Is the puff stitch hard?
It is a beginner-friendly stitch: three pulled-up loops closed together. The stitch guide shows exactly how many loops end up on the hook.
How do I change the size?
Add or remove blocks in multiples of 16 stitches across (keep an odd number of blocks), and add or remove bands of 12 rows for length.
Can I carry the yarn instead of cutting?
Yes. Colours change at the side edge every 12 rows, so carry them up the side and the border hides them.
What yarn is best for a baby?
A soft, machine-washable DK in acrylic, cotton or a cotton blend. Avoid fuzzy mohair for babies.
