About this pattern
The Market Day tote starts with a flat oval base that stands up on its own, then grows into a textured moss-stitch body. The handles are worked into the last rounds, so there is nothing to sew on.
Cotton yarn makes it strong enough for a full load of vegetables. Make one in your favourite colour, then add the little heart appliqué if you like.
Why you'll love it
- A flat base that keeps its shape
- Moss stitch is easy and has a woven look
- Built-in handles with no sewing
- Strong enough for groceries and washable

Common mistakes & how to fix them
- The base curls up like a bowl.
- You are increasing too little or crocheting too tightly. Check the counts for Rnds 1–6 and try a bigger hook for the base only.
- The moss stitch is slanting.
- This is normal in rounds. Join each round with a sl st and start the next round in the first ch-1 space to keep it straight.
- The handles stretch.
- Work the handle rounds tightly, or add a round of sl st along the inner edge.

Body
Info: Try the bag on your shoulder after Rnd 30. Add or remove moss rounds here to change the height.
Top band & handles
Change to denim blue.
Heart appliqué (optional)
Assembly
- 1
Weave in all ends on the inside of the bag.
- 2
Sew the heart to the front of the bag, centred about 8 cm below the top band.
- 3
Steam the base flat. For extra structure, slide a piece of plastic canvas cut to 35 × 6 cm into the bottom.
Important notes
- Tip: Mark the first stitch of each base round. The increases always sit at the two curved ends.
- Tip: 100% cotton holds its shape best. Acrylic will stretch when the bag is full.
- Tip: Wash in cool water and dry flat to keep the size.

Will the bag stretch when it is full?
Cotton stretches very little. The sc top band and handles help keep the shape.
Can I make the handles longer?
Yes. Change the ch 50 in Rnd 45 to ch 70 for a shoulder bag. Every 10 chains add about 6 cm.
How do I make the base flat?
Follow the increase counts exactly. If it still cups, use a hook one size larger for Rnds 1–4.
Can I use t-shirt yarn?
Yes, with a 9 mm hook. Use half the stitch counts and work fewer rounds, checking the size as you go.
Can I sell what I make from this pattern?
Yes. You may sell finished items made from this pattern in small handmade batches. Please credit Sweety Dreamz as the designer. Do not share, translate or resell the written pattern or its photos.
Is there a printable version?
Yes. Use the Print button at the top of the page. The print view removes ads and decorations, and you can leave out the pictures to save ink.
