Treble Crochet: Step-by-Step Tutorial
Treble crochet (also called triple crochet) is an extra-tall stitch made with two yarn overs. It creates open, lacy fabric and is used in shells, flowers and the curved tops of crochet hearts. In UK terms it is called double treble crochet.
- Turning chain
- 4 chains (usually count as the first stitch)
- Height
- About three times as tall as a single crochet
Step by step
1. Yarn over twice
Wrap the yarn over the hook two times.
2. Insert and pull up a loop
Insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. There are 4 loops on the hook.
3. Through two, three times
Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Repeat twice more until one loop is left.
Illustrations show the hook and the loops on it at the end of each step. Instructions use US terms (tr); in UK patterns this stitch is written as dtr.

Tips
- Keep the two wraps loose on the shaft so they slide easily.
- Treble crochet is great for quickly adding height in a single row.
Common mistakes
- The stitch looks messy and loose.
- Hold the wraps with your index finger as you work through them, and keep an even tension.
