Puff Stitch: Step-by-Step Tutorial
A puff stitch is made by pulling up several long loops in the same stitch and closing them all at once. It is softer and flatter than a bobble, and makes the squishy blocks in our Cloud Nine blanket.
- Turning chain
- 2 chains (in our patterns, does not count)
- Height
- Half double crochet height
Step by step
1. Yarn over and pull up a long loop
Yarn over, insert into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop to the height of a half double crochet. You have 3 loops.
2. Repeat twice more
Repeat in the same stitch two more times, keeping every loop the same height. You have 7 loops.
3. Close the puff
Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops. Many crocheters add a chain 1 to close it.
Illustrations show the hook and the loops on it at the end of each step. Instructions use US terms (puff); in UK patterns this stitch is written as puff.

Tips
- Use a hook with a smooth, tapered head so the loops slide.
- Keep loops even: hold them on the shaft with your index finger.
Common mistakes
- My puffs are lumpy or uneven.
- Pull every loop to exactly the same height before you close the stitch.
Questions
Why can I not pull through all the loops?
The loops are too tight. Pull them up taller, or use a hook half a size larger.
Do puff stitches use a lot of yarn?
Yes, about 30% more than half double crochet over the same area.
