About this pattern
This little whale is worked from the nose to the tail in one piece, so there is very little sewing. A cream belly patch, two fins and a tail fluke are added at the end, with a fluffy yarn spout on top.
It fits in the palm of your hand and makes a sweet baby shower gift or a desk buddy. Make a whole pod in different blues.
Why you'll love it
- The body is one piece from nose to tail
- Only about 2 hours from start to finish
- The yarn spout is fun and fluffy
- Uses small amounts of yarn
Step progress photos
- 1
Nose done
The body after Rnd 14: a round 36-stitch dome.
- 2
Tapering
Decreases shape the body towards the tail. Stuff as you go.
- 3
Tail closed
The end is flattened and closed with 4 sc through both layers.
- 4
Swimming
Belly, fins, tail fluke and spout sewn on.
Switch things up
Whale family
Make a smaller calf by stopping the increases at Rnd 5 (30 sts), then follow the same decrease rounds starting from Rnd 17.
Bath toy
Use acrylic yarn and fill with polyester pellets in a tied stocking, so it dries quickly.
Narwhal
Add a 6-round cone of gold yarn (start with 4 sc in MR) as a horn on the forehead.

Common mistakes & how to fix them
- The tail end is lumpy.
- Stop stuffing after Rnd 21 and add only a small amount after Rnd 23, so the end can be flattened neatly.
- The belly patch does not lie flat.
- Pin it with the long side along the body before sewing, and sew through the back loops of the edge.
- The spout falls out.
- Knot the strands through two stitches, then add a dot of fabric glue on the inside of the knot.

The pattern
Body
With denim blue, starting at the nose.
Info: Place the safety eyes between Rnds 10 and 11, about 14 stitches apart. For babies, embroider the eyes instead.
Info: Start stuffing now and keep adding a little after every round.
Tail fluke (make 2) & fins (make 2)
Info: Do not stuff the flukes or fins. Flatten them and leave long tails for sewing.
Belly patch
With cream. Worked around both sides of a chain.
Assembly
- 1
Sew the two flukes side by side to the flattened tail end, angled up into a V.
- 2
Pin the belly patch under the face so its front edge sits at Rnd 6, then sew around it.
- 3
Sew one fin to each side at Rnd 15, just below the eye line.
- 4
Fold three 8 cm strands of sky blue in half, pull the fold through a stitch on top of the head at Rnd 4, knot, and fray the ends.
- 5
Embroider a small smile and add pink cheeks below the eyes.
Important notes
- Tip: Work in continuous rounds and move your marker every round.
- Tip: Use invisible decreases (front loops only) for a smooth body.
- Tip: Safety eyes are not suitable for children under 3. Embroider them instead.

Is this pattern suitable for beginners?
Yes, if you know how to work in the round. The only new skill is working around both sides of a chain for the belly.
How long does it take?
About 2 hours for most crocheters, including assembly.
How do I make the spout?
Fold yarn strands in half, pull the loop through a stitch, pass the ends through the loop and tighten. Brush the ends to fluff them.
Can I make a bigger whale?
Use chunky yarn and a 5 mm hook for a whale about twice the size, with the same stitch counts.
Can I sell what I make from this pattern?
Yes. You may sell finished items made from this pattern in small handmade batches. Please credit Sweety Dreamz as the designer. Do not share, translate or resell the written pattern or its photos.
