About this pattern

Back-loop slip stitches stack into deep vertical ribs that look like knitting. The hat is worked sideways as one long rectangle, seamed into a tube and cinched at the top. There is no counting of increases at all.

It is the hat we make when we want something mindless and cosy. The slip stitch fabric is dense and warm, and it stretches to fit a range of heads.

Why you'll love it

  • A knit look using only slip stitches
  • No increases or decreases, just one row repeated
  • Very stretchy, so it fits most adults
  • A big pom-pom finish

Switch things up

  • Child size

Chain 36 and work about 100 rows, or until the piece wraps the head with gentle stretch.

  • Faux-fur pom-pom

Sew a snap to the crown and a faux-fur pom-pom to the other half so you can take it off to wash.

  • Two-tone brim

Work the first 10 stitches of every row in a contrast colour, carrying the yarn behind, for a coloured cuff.

Colour ideas:

  • Denim
  • Mustard
  • Blush

Common mistakes & how to fix them

My slip stitches are too tight to work into.
This stitch must be worked loosely. Use the 6 mm hook (or larger) and lift each loop up to the hook shaft before the next stitch.
The rectangle slants into a parallelogram.
Make sure you work the last stitch of every row, into the turning stitch. Count to 45 every few rows.
There is a hole at the crown.
Run the gathering yarn through every row end twice and pull firmly before knotting.

    Important notes

    • Tip: Back-loop slip stitch is the secret to the ribbing. Never work into both loops.
    • Tip: If you crochet tightly, go up to a 6.5 mm or 7 mm hook.
    • Tip: Keep a tally of your rows with the row counter on this page.

    Pattern FAQ

Why slip stitch instead of single crochet?

Back-loop slip stitch makes a thinner, stretchier and much more knit-like rib than single crochet.

How do I adjust the size?

Change the number of rows for the circumference, and the starting chain for the height (every 10 stitches add about 7 cm).

Can I use worsted instead of Aran?

Yes, with a 5.5 mm hook. Add about 10 rows and check the fit before seaming.

Will it stretch out over time?

Slip stitch fabric is dense and holds its shape well. A wool-blend yarn recovers best.

Can I sell what I make from this pattern?

Yes. You may sell finished items made from this pattern in small handmade batches. Please credit Sweety Dreamz as the designer. Do not share, translate or resell the written pattern or its photos.

    Is there a printable version?

Yes. Use the Print button at the top of the page. The print view removes ads and decorations, and you can leave out the pictures to save ink.
