About this pattern

These pumpkins start life as simple ribbed rectangles. Seam them into a tube, gather both ends, and wrap yarn around the middle to pull in realistic segments. A stem, a leaf and a curly tendril finish them off.

Make a cluster in three sizes and mix orange with cream, sage and dusty blue for a modern autumn table.

Why you'll love it

  • Just rows of back-loop sc
  • Three sizes from one pattern
  • Wrapped segments look like real pumpkins
  • A great project for using up scraps

Step progress photos

Switch things up

  • Velvet pumpkins

Use chenille yarn and a 5 mm hook. Work in BLO as usual, then brush lightly for a plush finish.

  • Pumpkin garland

Make 7 small pumpkins and thread them onto a twisted cord with wooden beads between them.

  • Spice scent

Tuck a cinnamon stick into the stuffing before closing the second end.

Colour ideas:

  • Classic orange
  • Ghost white
  • Dusty blue

Common mistakes & how to fix them

The pumpkin is too tall.
Pull the gathers tighter and press the top down before wrapping the segments.
The segments are uneven.
Wrap the yarn through the centre each time, and push the wraps into the gaps between ribs before pulling.
The stuffing shows between the ribs.
Use a smaller hook, or put the stuffing in a thin sock or stocking before inserting it.

    Assembly

    1. 1

Thread the tail through the row ends along one edge of the tube, pull tight and knot. This is the bottom.

    2. 2

Stuff firmly, then gather the top edge the same way and knot.

    3. 3

With a long strand of orange, go from the top centre down through the bottom centre, wrap around the outside, and back through the centre. Repeat 6 times, spacing the wraps evenly, and pull each one snug.

    4. 4

Sew the stem into the top centre, then sew the leaf and the tendril next to it.

    Important notes

    • Tip: Always work in the back loop only after Row 1. That is what makes the ribs.
    • Tip: Leave a long tail at the start and the end for seaming and gathering.
    • Tip: The wraps do the shaping, so pull them firmly.

    Pattern FAQ

Can I make pumpkins in other sizes?

Yes. The chain sets the height, and the number of rows sets the width. Keep the row count about twice the stitch count.

What yarn makes the best pumpkins?

Worsted acrylic or cotton for crisp ribs, or chenille for a soft velvet look.

How do I make the segments deeper?

Pull each wrap firmly and push it into the valley between two ribs before you make the next one.

    Can kids help?

Yes! Older children can wrap the segments and choose the stem colours.

Can I sell what I make from this pattern?

Yes. You may sell finished items made from this pattern in small handmade batches. Please credit Sweety Dreamz as the designer. Do not share, translate or resell the written pattern or its photos.

    Is there a printable version?

Yes. Use the Print button at the top of the page. The print view removes ads and decorations, and you can leave out the pictures to save ink.
