About this pattern

The Sunburst square starts with a ring of puffy bobbles, blooms into a round of clusters, then squares off in two classic granny rounds. Five rounds, about an hour, and every round can be a different colour.

It is the perfect scrap-buster. Make a stack while you watch TV, then join them into a blanket, a tote, a cushion or a cardigan.

Why you'll love it

  • Only five rounds per square
  • A great way to use up leftover DK yarn
  • The bobble centre adds texture without being difficult
  • Joins into almost anything

Step progress photos

Switch things up

  • Bigger square

Repeat Rnd 4 one or more times, adding one more 3-dc group on each side per round.

  • Granny cardigan

Join 40–60 squares (depending on size) in two rectangles for the body and two tubes for the sleeves.

  • One-colour square

Work every round in the same colour and join with sl st instead of cutting.

Colour ideas:

  • Seaside
  • Sorbet
  • Sunshine

Common mistakes & how to fix them

My square is ruffled or wavy.
Check that each side has the right number of 3-dc groups, and that corners have only one ch-2 space.
The bobbles lie flat.
Push each bobble to the right side as you go. Rnd 1 is worked with the right side facing you.
Squares come out different sizes.
Use the same hook and brand of yarn for all squares, and block them all together at the end.

    Assembly

    1. 1

Block all squares to 10 cm by pinning them damp to a board or towel.

    2. 2

Lay out the squares and photograph the arrangement before you start joining.

    3. 3

Join with right sides facing up: sl st through the back loops of both squares, or whip stitch with a tapestry needle.

    4. 4

Finish a blanket with two rounds of sc in your border colour.

    Important notes

    • Tip: Change colours as often as you like. The pattern works with any combination.
    • Tip: Join new colours in a different corner each round to spread out the bulk of the joins.
    • Tip: Count the dc on each side after Rnd 4: you should have 12 per side, including the corner groups.

    Pattern FAQ

How many squares do I need for a blanket?

    About 42 squares (6 × 7) for a baby blanket and 120 (10 × 12) for a sofa throw.

Do I have to cut the yarn every round?

Only when you change colour. For one-colour squares, sl st to the next space instead of fastening off.

What is the best way to join?

Slip stitch through the back loops gives a neat ridge. Whip stitching is flatter and almost invisible.

Can I use different yarn weights?

Keep one weight per project so the squares are the same size. Worsted with a 5 mm hook makes a 12 cm square.

Can I sell what I make from this pattern?

Yes. You may sell finished items made from this pattern in small handmade batches. Please credit Sweety Dreamz as the designer. Do not share, translate or resell the written pattern or its photos.

    Is there a printable version?

Yes. Use the Print button at the top of the page. The print view removes ads and decorations, and you can leave out the pictures to save ink.
