Scarves & Shawls Crochet Patterns

A scarf is the classic first crochet project, and a shawl is often the first lace. These patterns range from quick chunky scarves you can finish in a weekend to drapey wraps that are blocked open for a light, lacy finish.

Each pattern tells you how to adjust the length and width, and how much extra yarn to allow for a fringe.

Scarves & Shawls FAQ

How long should a scarf be?

About 150–180 cm for an adult scarf that wraps once, or 200 cm or more to wrap twice.

Why does my scarf curl?

Tight foundation chains and stitches pull the edges in. Use a hook one size larger for the foundation chain, and block the finished scarf.

What yarn drapes best for shawls?

Wool, alpaca and bamboo blends drape beautifully. Acrylic can work but needs steam blocking to relax.
